Why Protected Fat ? The diary cow can respond to a much higher fat level in its diet than can be provided using conventional fat sources. The maximum efficiency of mil production is achieved when fat contributes between 16% and 18% of the dietary energy intake. However, there are disadvantages associated with adding free or unprotected fats to ruminant rations. Dairy cows require a fairly saturated or hard fat which can be difficult to handle. Some fats are unpalatable and could cause feed intake problems. Rumen-active fats can reduce the digestibility of the fiber and adversely affect rumen fermentation and motility causing drops in both milk quantity and quality. what is the required is a fat source which is rumen-inert but which is very digestible in the small intestine.
